An estimate on the NMFC 13-step density scale in effect since July 19, 2025. Some items have their own NMFC class instead of a density class, and the carrier's measurements decide the class on your bill. How density and class work.

Freight class
questions.

How do I calculate freight density?

Multiply length × width × height in inches for each handling unit, divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet, add up all units, then divide total weight in pounds by total cubic feet.

Do I include the pallet?

Yes. Measure and weigh the whole handling unit, pallet and packaging included. That's what the carrier measures.

What changed on July 19, 2025?

NMFC Docket 2025-1 replaced the 11-step density scale with a 13-step scale that adds classes 55 and 50, and moved many items onto density-based classes.

Is the calculator's class final?

No. It's an estimate on the density scale. Some items have their own NMFC listing, and the carrier can re-measure and re-class the shipment.

What if my freight is urgent?

LTL dates are estimates. For a deadline, a dedicated expedite truck goes straight to the delivery address. Muvo quotes both side by side.
